Few big chains clearly allow chalk. Some allow it with limits, some allow only liquid chalk, and some, like Planet Fitness, say no. Most chains have no written rule, so policies vary, ask your club. Independent strength and powerlifting gyms are the most likely to allow chalk.

We will not guess at a chain's rule. When a chain publishes something quotable, we add it.
Why do so few chains allow chalk?
Chalk gets on bars, benches, floors and clothes. At a big commercial gym, staff clean all of it, and most members never use chalk. A ban is the cheap answer. Gyms built for strength sports usually see it the other way: chalk is part of the sport, and they plan cleaning around it. That is why the best place to find a yes is a powerlifting, weightlifting or strongman gym, not a chain.
How do you find a gym near you that allows chalk?
- Use the Chalk filter on the finder. It shows gyms whose own website says chalk is welcome, with the quote and the link.
- Check the list of chalk friendly gyms, grouped by state and province.
- Read the gym's site. Look in the FAQ, rules or etiquette pages. Search the page for "chalk."
- Ask. If nothing is written, our guide on how to ask your gym about chalk has a short script.
If your gym says no, PRGRIP, the company that runs Chalkproof, has a guide to gym chalk rules and grip alternatives.
